So the first thing you have to know about been nervous when giving a speech is that most of you, don’t over prepare, yes, let’s say you’re about to deliver a 15 minutes speech in front of a group of audience and all you put in it, in preparation is only an hour, you’re definitely going to get nervous, because you don’t know if you’re fully prepared, so if you’re told before-hand that you’re going to be preparing let’s say two weeks from now, if you over prepare for the 15 minutes speech, like giving yourself 5 hours every day, practicing in front of the mirror, recording your voice, then you’ll be able to know you’re mistakes and correct them. But if you spend an hour you’ll won’t be able to discover them.
The second tip on not to get nervous when giving a public speech, I use to be nervous, when all I focused on is me, I was so concerned about what people think of me, do I sound good?, is my grammar ok?, would they understand my accent?.
Whenever you’re in front of an audience and you focus on yourself how people perceive you, you’ll definitely get nervous, because you’re afraid of been judged, but when you shift your focus from yourself and focus on the audience instead, how can I change their lives, how am I going to make an impact?, the moment you do that not focusing on yourself but on your audience, the nervousness is gone. Because when you focus on the audience you connect with them. That way you don’t focus on how you look anymore.

Now the third tip, everything is energy, speaking is energy and that is critical for every public speaker, but I would recommend you do the participation energy, the participation energy is you making the audience participate in whatever you’re doing, imagine you’re giving a seminar and you’re the only one just talking and talking, not only will the audience get bored but they may leave not even grabbing a single point in your topic, but if the class is interactive, where the audience are actively participating not only will the class be lively and fun but it will also stick much better in the audience mind. So when you develop the participation energy, the interactive energy, guess what you’ll get less nervous,

Now that we’ve known about that, it would be nice to know how to be able to captivate their attention, these trick can be applied in any presentation setting whether it’s at work or elsewhere, because when you stand in a group of audience and give a speech on a topic, whether you’re talking about micro economic, forecasting revenue, or you’re telling a story you must captivate their attention first, and luckily, for you that’s one of the things that we’re going to focus on.

When you’re giving a speech, the first thing is to start with a prop, I know some of you are wondering, how do I do that, but it’s really that simple, the truth is that anything that is a physical object, that people do not understand why you’re doing it, or holding it is a prop, it could be a piece of fruit that has a metaphorical meaning, I’ve seen people do that, the trick is to have a physical object, because that helps to capture people’s attention, and that’s why this is the most critical thing at the start of a speech, because if you just go up there and start to speak in front of people, you have about 10 seconds to capture their attention and captivate them before they tune out completely, so if you can’t capture their attention within that moment, then you’ve lost your audience. So there is need for you to do something interesting and the only way you can do that is by using a prop.
The next thing you have to do Is that you need to get your audience interaction absolutely within the first few minutes, you see a lot of speakers do this, it can feel hack need but they ask questions like “show a hand who’ve seen this?” “let me see your hand if you’ve heard of this?” you must get the audience moving, speaking and responding to you if you want them to listen and If you want them to engage with what you’re saying.
Another important thing to note is, although they are different ways to engage with your audience, the best and the most effective is if you do it with humor, because humor lightens the tension around a room, so by adding humor to whatever you’re saying helps to engage your audience.

The next thing you need to effectively master, if you’re giving a speech and want to captivate your audience is the art of storytelling, because the human brain did not evolve to digest and connect with statistics, you can talk about global warming, or world hunger or how many millions and billions and hundreds of thousands, but the human brain is not persuaded by that, what is persuasive is individual anecdote, though it’s a logical fallacy if you want to move people emotionally, you need to tell the stories of individuals.

Although when telling those stories even in dry environments, to a group of people, you are performing so you need to move your body, gesticulate more, and you also need to embody characters, if you can take people into the present tense of any story any moment, that’s going to be more powerful than summarizing it. And if you can go beyond the present tense and act it out vividly and real, maybe play a character, that is going to be something that people can connect with much more, and will ultimately be moved to act upon, because when you get in front of people, your goal is not just to say some words, your goal is for them to walk away having heard something that inspired them to change their live to behave differently. And using this technique is just a great way in which you can do that.
Now after you have told your stories and anecdotes and after you have captured the attention of your audience, it’s usually the end when people are wide open to suck in, into your stories from you hooking your attentions, that you can drop whatever insights, or nuggets that you want them to take away with, because if you captivate people with stories the truth is that they are wild open to you telling them the more and that is what you wanted all along.
And here’s a final tip, although I it’s somehow in form of a cliché, but a lot of speakers do that, they come in full circle, using the prop, or with a metaphor or probably an analogy, to cite a example and then come back to it at the end.
This is a very popular trick that most speakers use, but you don’t have to force it, if you can’t do it, but if there’s a way that you can do it, it a very great trick, alright guys, what do you think.
